chapter 1 Flashcards
Acclimate
To adapt to something new (despite knowing the difficulty of acclimating in a new state and college , i am still determined to go.)
Hex
“an evil spell” when
it’s used as a noun or “to put an evil spell on someone” when it’s used as
a verb. (Your failure might just be a result of your inconsistency rather than being a hex by someone you hate.)
Aphrodisiac
a drug to heighten amorous feelings (Couples in new relationships behave as if they are on aphrodisiac.)
Amorous
showing sexual desire or love for somebody ( There has been plenty of cases when i have not been to pick someone’s amorous actions towards me.)
Eleemosynary
dependent on charity (I hate people who never bring their own stuff and have an evergreen eleemosynary nature without a hesitation or second thought.)
Germane
relevant ( While selecting the right options in RC focus on the options which are germane to the questions as well as RC.)
Laconic / Taciturn
speaking very little (This taciturn / laconic behaviour of mine maybe helpful for achieving peace of mind but is a solid demerit for i aim to build networks in MBA.)
Polysyllabic
a word with multiple syllables
Sesquipedalian
a humorous word for long words, literally a “foot and a
half” long (Using long words may sound impressive but using them in a situation where majority people won’t be bale to connect with you due to you trying to being the king of sesquipedalians will be a foolish move.)
Ape/Aping
the action of
attempting an overly exact imitation and ending up with negative or laugh
able results (Find your own style ; don’t try to just ape every other influencer out there on the internet.) .
Dun/Dunnning
a verb meaning to insist on the payment of a debt ( You can cut off your dunning siblings but not a legal notice from court.)
Fop
a noun, always critical and always reserved for males. It’s used for a man who, in a mainstream opinion, is too concerned
with his looks and his clothes. ( There’s a big difference in carrying your outfit confidently and being a fop.)
Gad/Gadding
a verb, it means to move about, travel, usually in a kind of aimless
way ( Gadding about to different malls to compare sneaker prices can waste a lot
of time and gas money.)
Hexa (greek)
six
Ken
Usually a noun, “ken”
refers to your understanding, the limits of your knowledge (With every new article i feel like everything is just out of my ken which can be demotivating at times.)
Pox
old-fashioned noun meaning bad luck. You’ll still hear the
phrase “A pox on you” as a kind of humorous curse. ( If asked a few months back about my last year’s boyfriend, who treated me shab
bily, i would have responded, “A pox on him! I’ve moved on.”, but not now.)
Sow
As a verb, this is an agricultural term pronounced to rhyme with row
and meaning to plant a seed, literally or figuratively. As a noun, it rhymes with cow, but refers to a different creature, the
female pig. ( There are female sheeps in shaun the sheep but it has no sow.)
Vex
To annoy or perplex ( “You vex me.”, Kate said in an attempt to push Anthony bridgerton away.)(Would you be vexed if someone hexed you with a variety
of pox?)
Vie/Vying
A verb meaning compete, contend. ( If we spend our lives always vying with others , we will never get a moment of peace .)
