Retribution
Emphasizes the idea of punishment for wrongdoing. It is based on the belief that individuals who commit crimes should be punished as a form of retribution for their actions
Specific Deterrence:
Deterring an individual offender from committing future crimes by imposing a punishment that are severe enough to dissuade them
General Deterrence
Deterring potential offenders by making examples of punished individuals and publicizing the consequences
Incapacitation
Focuses on preventing crime by physically restraining or removing individuals from society who are deemed to be a threat to public safety
Restitution
Involves compensating victims, their families, or the community for the losses they experienced due to a crime.
Rehabilitation
To address the underlying causes of criminal behavior and promote positive change in offenders, ultimately reducing their likelihood of reoffending
