Crimes Against Public Order Crime
Prostitution, Illicit Drugs, Terrorism, and Impaired Driving.
Majority of Sexual Assaults
In 2018, 28,741 sexual assaults reported nation wide. 98% of those were classified as level 1.
Violent Crime
A victim is harmed by or threatened with violence. Include rape, sexual assault, robbery, assault, and murder.
Non-violent Crimes
if there was no use of force or injury to another person. There are a wide range of crimes that fall under this category of crimes, including: Alcohol and non-violent drug-related crimes.
Mass Murder
The illegal killing of four or more victims at one location, within one event.
Serial Murders
Culpable Homicide that involves the killing of several victims in three or more separate events
Motor Vehicle Theft
The taking of a vehicle without the owner’s permission.
The motivations of hate crime
Bias, prejudice, based on race, national or ethnic origin, language, color, religion, sex, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, or any other similar factors
Property Crime with Violence
Robbery: The unlawful taking or attempted taking of property that is in the immediate possession of another by threatened or actual use of force or violence.
Property Crime Without Violence
The unlawful acts perpetrated with the intent of gaining property without use or threat of violence.
Define Motor Vehicle Theft
Any land-based motor vehicle excluded airplanes, boats, trains, and spacecraft.
What Percentage of criminal code incidents are about theft
In 2018, 637,557 incidents of theft accounted for about 24% of all criminal offences, over 50% of all property crimes. Over 64% were classified as theft $5000 and under.
Stranger on Stranger Murder
Stranger homicide is extremely rare. Young men are more likely to be at risk as women are far more likely to be killed by someone they know
Homicide rate in Canada in the past 40 years
Between 1961 and 1975 the homicide rate increased steadily from 1.28 per 100,000 population to a peak of 3.02, an increase of 136%. Since then, despite yearly fluctuations, the homicide rate has gradually declined to the current rate of 1.98, a decrease of 34%
Rape vs sexual assault
Rape hasn’t been listed as an offence in Canada’s Criminal Code since 1983, but that doesn’t mean that the act of rape isn’t extremely illegal. It is simply covered under the broader umbrella category of sexual assault, which encompasses everything from unwanted touch to forced penetration (rape) with a weapon.
Criminal Harassment
Also known as stalking, the repeated following, watching, or communicating with a person or someone known to the person in a way that causes that person to fear for their safety or for the safety of someone known to them.
Where robbery’s mostly occur
Occurred in an outdoor public location, such as the street or a parking lot (50%). 40% occurred in a commercial location, such as a convenience store, bank, or financial institution, gas station, or school, while residential settings accounted 10%.
Public Order Crime Definition
Acts considered illegal because they conflict with social policy, accepted moral rules, and public opinion.
Who can be charged with criminal harassment
Online stalkers can be charged under the criminal harassment provision of the Criminal Code
Murder
When a person intentionally causes death of another human being or intends to cause boldily harm likely to result death.
Homicide
When a person, directly or indirectly, by any means, causes death of a human being. Homicide can be culpable or non-culpable.
