chapter 3 Flashcards
What is radical innovation?
An innovation that is very new and different from prior solutions.
What is incremental innovation?
An innovation that makes a relatively minor change from (or adjustment to) existing practices.
What is meant by competence enhancing/ destroying innovations?
An innovation that builds on (or renders obsolete) existing knowledge and skills. Whether an innovation is competence enhancing or competence destroying depends on whose perspective is being taken.
What is meant by a component innovation?
An innovation to one or more components that does not significantly affect the overall
configuration of the system.
What is meant by architectural innovation?
An innovation that changes the overall design of a system or the way its components interact with each other.
Explain a discontinuous technology?
A new technology is discontinuous when it fulfills a similar market need, but does so by building on an entirely new knowledge base.
Explain technological diffusion?
The spread of a technology through a population.
What is meant by creative destruction?
The emergence of a new technological discontinuity can overturn the existing competitive structure of an industry, creating new leaders and new losers
Explain the technological cycle
It starts with a discountinous disovery, then you have an era of ferment with a design competition afterwards a dominant design arose. Which starts the era of incremental change in which firms focus on efficiency and market penetration.
what is a dominant design?
A product design that is adopted by the majority of producers, typically creating a stable architecture on which the industry can focus its efforts.
