Chapter 3 108-115 Flashcards
What is fiber optic cable
cable that has glass or plastic fibers at the core, not copper
how is data transmitted on fiber optic cable?
via light pulses – laser or LED
How is fiber optic cable good for transmission?
the light is reflected by the cladding, which allows the message to bend around corners w/o losing integrity
What is outside the cladding?
opaque plastic that prevents light from escaping and prevents stretching to protect the glass
what also protects the inner fibers?
strands of kevlar surround the wires, inside the plastic cladding
Why are two strands of fiber needed for data transmission?
because one glass wire can only send a message one way, so you need two to send a message back
what is zipcord cable?
two fiber optic wires one for each direction
what are the five benefits of fiber optic cables?
highest speed (throughput), better security, longer distances, high speed networking standard, more resistance to noise
what are the drawbacks of fiber optic cable
expense and difficult to repair wires w/o special tools
What is SMF
single mode fiber
why is SMF good
single strand of fiber, no light loss, data can travel far w/o a repeater, used for WANs
What depends on SMF
the internet backbone
What is MMF
multimode fiber
what is good about MMF
less expensive
where is MMF used?
router to switch cables or servers on the backbone of a network
What are fiber optic converters
required to connect fiber to copper based parts of a network
What are serial cables
a cable the transmits serial data, data issues one bit after another, not all at the same time
What is RS-232
Recommended standard 232, which is signal voltage, timing, and compatible interfaces
What are DB cables?
look like projector cables, pins in a D format DB 9 has 9 pins, DB 25 has 25 pins
