Chapter 25 - Ecology Flashcards
Allelopathy
Production of chemicals that alter growth of other plants
Phytoalexins
Chemicals that kill or inhibit disease, fungi, or bacteria
Devote all resources to growth most of life and then energy goes into single reproductive burst (like agave)
Big bang reproduction
Produce seeds throughout lifetime (most trees)
Repeated reproduction
Grow, reproduce, and die in one season
Annuals
Grow one year, reproduce second year, then die
Biennials
Produce vegetative structures that last many years
Perennials
Low stress, little disturbance…
Large, persistent, fast growing, slow reproducing plants
High stress, little disturbance…
Small, slow growing, limited reproductive ability, do not respond to nutrients
Low stress, substantial disturbance…
Fast growing, small, annual, reproduce quickly
Phenology
Timing of crucial events like germination, bud burst, flowering, seed production
Primary succession
Formation of soil beginning stages.
Secondary succession
Soil already present and surviving species in the area (burned land)
