Chapter 24 Shit Flashcards
What is a mission statement?
-An organization’s statement of purpose
-Should provide the s + c program with focus and direction
-Forms the foundation of effective administration
-Suggested criteria for a mission statement
+Should be short and sharply focused
+Should be clear and easy to understand
+Defines why the organization exists
+Does not prescribe means
+Broad in scope
+Provides direction for upholding the code of ethics
+Addresses and matches the organizations scope and practice
+Inspires commitment
-Addresses three important components:
+Target clientele
+The service being provided
+What makes the service unique
What should be considered when coming up with program goals?
-The desired end products of a strength and conditioning program stated in a broad and general manner
-Should be focused on scientific principles to enhance performance and increase injury resistance with intended outcomes specific to the sport and athlete’s position in the sport
-Mission statement and program objectives should involve both the strength and conditioning department, institution, athletic administration, and sports medicine department
What should be considered when coming up with program objectives?
-The specific means of attaining program goals
-Sample list of objectives:
+Design and administer strength, flexibility, aerobic, and plyometric training programs that reduce injury risk and improve performance
+Develop training programs to account for biomechanical and physiological differences between individual athletes, taking into consideration their ages, sex, training status, physical limitations, and injury status
+Recognize acute and chronic physiological responses and adaptations to training and their implications for the design of sport-specific training programs
+Educate athletes on the importance of good nutrition as well as sleep and its role in health and performance
+Educate athletes about the effects of performance-enhancing substances and their abuse, relevant school policy, and legislation
What is a performance team and how can it be used to improve the service?
-Concept of “performance team” - the use of individuals with specific areas of expertise as resources - can be applied in the creation of a strength and conditioning program that works toward meeting the preceding objectives
-Director of strength and conditioning should establish written policies and procedures for determining appropriate utilization of staff in the delivery of safe, effective, and efficient service
-Annual orientation meeting should be held at the beginning of the year or season to educate staff, sports coaches, and participants on the goals, objectives, policies, and procedures
What does the director of S+C do?
-Practitioner and administrator responsible for overall strength and conditioning program, facility, equipment, staff, and administrative tasks
-Responsibility examples:

+Design or review all training programs
+Oversee athletic performance operation to ensure compliance with institutional, conference, and governing bodies rules and regulations
+Develop and submit an annual budget to ensure compliance and efficient financial management
+Generate income and budget available funds for maintenance and facility improvement
+Develop staff work schedules, assign duties, and evaluate performance
+Achieve and maintain professional certifications with continuing education requirements
-Example qualifications:
+Bachelors or master’s degree - exercise science field preferred
+Certification through an independent qualified organization - i.e NSCA CSCS
+CPR/AED certification
+Two or more years of experience required in progressively responsible positions
What qualifications/abilities should the S+C staff have?
-Should possess cert from independently accredited organization (i.e. CSCS)
-Must perform continuing education to reduce liability exposure, particularly in supervision and instruction
-Must maintain CPR/AED certification
-Must understand program policies and procedures
-Must understand governing body rules and regulations
-Must have knowledge of program philosophy and instruction methods
What are potential legal and ethical issues?
-Everyone involved in s + c must be cognizant of legal liability
-Risk of injury cannot be completely eliminated - requires risk management
+The employment of strategies to decrease and control the risk of injury from athletic participation, thereby reducing the liability exposure
What is informed consent?
the process by which a procedure or activity is described to a participant, with an explanation of the inherent risks benefits involved, allowing the individual to determine if he or she desires to participate
What is liability?
legal responsibility, obligation, or duty - strength and conditioning professionals have a duty to the athletes they serve by virtue of their employment to respond to injuries and attempt to prevent injuries
What are standards of care?
what a responsible and prudent person would do under similar circumstances- s+c professionals are expected to act according to their education, level of training, and certification status
What is negligence?
failure to act as a reasonable and prudent person under similar circumstances
What are the elements of negligence?
+Duty - s+c professional must have hada duty to act
+Breach of duty - s+c pro must be shown to have failed to act according to responsibilities with an appropriate standard of care
+Proximate cause - the natural and continuous sequence of reasonably foreseeable events - i.e. noticing a worn-out cable
+Damages - physical or economic injury
-Assumption of risk - knowing that an inherent risk exists with participation in an activity and voluntarily deciding to participate anyway
What is a preparticipation screening?
-Athlete’s must be screened in accordance with relevant governing bodies before accessing strength and conditioning facilities
-Requirement is established under section 1 of “Strength and Conditioning Professional Standards and Guidelines”
-S+C professionals do not need the physical copy of the examination but should have signed statement of proof of medical clearance before participating
-Additional proof needed for athletes returning from injuries or with specific health conditions (i.e. epilepsy, diabetes, asthma)
-Procedures must be in place to ensure documentation and clearance by sports medicine staff for participation
-Ultimately it is the responsibility of the sports medicine staff to allow athlete to begin involvement with strength and conditioning
+Medical clearance is outside the S&C professional’s scope of practice
What is eligibility criteria?
-To focus attention and efforts on the target population, eligibility requirements for participants must be established
+Example criteria for facility use:
++Full or part time student athletes participating in department-sponsored sport
++Students in physical education classes
++Athletic department coaching and administrative staff
++Alumni athletes who participated in athletic-department sponsored sport and completed their eligibility
++Individuals or groups approved by the athletic director
How can criteria be established for outside group facility use?
-Use must be pre approved by athletic director
-Program or session must be supervised
-Program must be scheduled during off-hours
-Outside organization must supply proof of liability insurance
-Participants must sign release agreement
-Participants must follow rules and regulations of the facility
