Chapter 24: Fungi Flashcards
1
Q
Fungi are _______.
A
Eukaryotes
2
Q
What are characteristics of fungi? (closely related to animals than plants)
A
- Chitin in their cell walls
- No photosynthetic pigments
- No chloroplasts
- Heterotrophic – they absorb carbon as a food source, they do not fix
carbon to create glucose
3
Q
How can fungi reproduce?
A
asexual, sexual, can form mutualistic relationships with other species. can be a parasite
4
Q
Fungal cell structure:
A
- Cells have nucleus with chromosomes, DNA wrapped around histones. Their body tissue is haploid (n) – only one set of chromosomes
- Have membrane-bound organelles
- Have mitochondria
- No chloroplasts, no chlorophyll
- Have cellular pigments
- Not used for photosynthesis
- Protect against UV light
- Many fungal pigments are toxic
- Have cell walls with chitin and glucans
- Plasma membrane has ergosterol not cholesterol
- They are nonmotile
5
Q
What is chitin?
A
- complex polysaccharide
- Provides cellular strength
- Also found in arthropods
