National law

Treaty
An agreement formed between two or more independent nations
International organization
Generally refers to an organization composed mainly of nations and usually established by treaty
Civil law system
Derived from Roman Empire; based on a code rather than case law
- Louisiana is only state that has a civil law system

Comity
A deference by which one nation gives effect to the laws and judicial decrees of another nation. This recognition is based primarily on respect

Act of state doctrine
A doctrine that provides that the judicial branch of one country will not examine the validity of public acts committed by a recognized foreign government within its own territory
Expropriation
The seizure by a government of privately owned business or personal property for a proper public purpose and with just compensation
Confiscation
A governments taking of privately owned business or personal property without a proper public purpose or an award of just compensation
Sovereign immunity
A doctrine that immunizes foreign nations from the jurisdiction of US courts when certain conditions are satisfied
When a foreign state will not be immune
- When the foreign state has waived its immunity either explicitly or by implication
- Has engaged in commercial activity in the US or outside the US that has a direct effect on the US
- Has committed a tort in the US or has violated certain international laws
Export
To sell products to buyers located in other countries
Distribution agreement
A contract between a seller and a distributor of the sellers products setting out the terms and conditions of the distributor ship
