Chapter 24 Flashcards
What is a subspecies?
Groups of the same species that have different traits
Ecotypes
Bacterial species that are adapted to a local environment
What are the 5 characteristics of species?
1) morphological traits
2) interbreeding
3) molecular features
4) ecological features
5) evolutionary relationships
Reproductive isolation
Mechanisms that prevent mating btwn 2 different species
Interspecies hybrid
When 2 different species are able to make an offspring
What are the 2 types of reproductive isolation?
1) prezygotic
2) postzygotic
What are the 5 subunits for prezygotic isolation? And what do they do?
1) Habitat- different habitats “geographic barrier”
2) temporal- different time of day
3) behavioral- different behaviors
4) mechanical- different body parts
5) gametic- gametes are not compatible
Same thing for postzygotic isolation?
1) hybrid inviability- egg of 1 species is fertilized by another species
2) hybrid sterility- hybrid survives but can’t mate (mule)
3) hybrid breakdown- 1st generation is viable but on going generations won’t have good fitness
Speciation
Forming new species; occur during abrupt events (changes in chromosome #)
What are the 2 types of speciation? Define them
1) Cladogenesis- division of 2 or more species; gene flow; interrupted
2) allopatric speciation- method of cladogenesis; become geographically separate
Hybrid zones
Zones where 2 populations can mate; geographic separation is not complete
Sympatric speciation
Members of a species that are within the same range into 2 or more different species
