Chapter 23 Flashcards
What is a population?
A group of individual organisms that occupy the same environment
What are genetics?
The study of genes and heredity; contains certain qualities that pass from parent to offspring
What is population genetics?
An extension of evolution
Gene pool
All of the alleles for every gene in a population
T or F: Are populations dynamic?
T
What can populations do?
1) Change in size
2) geographic location
3) adapt to different circumstances
T or F: Genes are not polymorphic
F; genes are polymorphic
Polymorphic
The presence of two or more variations for a given character
What is an allele?
A variant form of a gene
What is the difference between a genotype & phenotype?
Genotype: actual genetic info “B” or “b”
Phenotype: physical result of the genetic info
Dominant vs recessive
Dominant: capital letter that expressed the phenotype “B”
Recessive: lower case letter that does not expressed the phenotype “b”
What is the difference btwn an allele frequency and a genotype frequency?
Allele frequency: how many B or b are in a population
Genotype frequency: how many BB, Bb, and or bb there are
