Chapter 23 Flashcards
Allergic reaction
the body’s immune system response to a substance that is typically harmless but is perceived as a threat
Allergen
a substance that can cause an allergic reaction in some individuals
Anaphylaxis
a severe and potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that occurs rapidly after exposure to an allergen
Angiodema
a condition characterized by rapid swelling of the deeper layers of the skin, often occurring around the eyes and lips. It can also affect the throat, hands, feet, and genitalia
Epinephrine
hormone and neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in the body’s “fight or flight” response, constricts blood vessels, increase heart rate, and improve airway function
Epinephrine doses for adults and for children
0.3 mg for adults
0.15 mg for children
Angiodema
condition characterized by the rapid swelling of deeper layers of the skin, often occurring around the eyes and lips. It can also affect the throat, hands, feet, and genitals. This swelling is typically caused by the release of histamines
Histamines
chemicals released by the immune system in response to injury, inflammation, or allergens
Allergic reaction vs anaphylactic reaction
Allergic is more mild while anaphylactic is more severe, with things like the throat swelling and closing up
Acute coronary syndrome
a range of conditions associated with sudden, reduced blood flow to the heart muscle
Metered dose inhaler (MDI)
device that delivers a specific amount of medication to the lungs in the form of a mist
Status asthmaticus
a severe and potentially life-threatening asthma attack that does not respond adequately to standard treatments like bronchodilators
Medical term for shock
Hypoperfusion
