Chapter 19 Flashcards
Inspiration definition
The diaphragm contracting, pulling air into the lungs, synonym for inhalation.
Expiration definition
The passive process of relaxing the diaphragm, pushing air out, synonym for exhalation.
Adult normal breath rate
12-20 a minute
School age child normal breath rate
18-30 a minute
Infant normal breath rate
30-60 a minute
Common ways of determining adequate breathing
Skin color, oxygen saturation, rate, rhythm, quality.
CPAP
Non invasive positive pressure ventilation to prevent collapse of airway and alleviate difficulty breathing.
Instances to use CPAP
Pulmonary edema, asthma and COPD, respiratory failure
Pulmonary edema
Accumulation of fluid in or around the alveoli
Pneumonia
Infection of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi causing inflammation in the lungs.
Spontaneous pneumothorax
A lung collapse without injury or obvious cause.
Pulmonary embolism
Anything that is not blood getting into the blood vessels.
Croup
A respiratory condition in children, characterized by inflammation of the upper airway, causing a barking cough and noisy breathing.
Bronchiolitis
a viral respiratory infection that primarily affects the small airways (bronchioles) in infants and young children, leading to coughing, wheezing, and difficulty breathing
Cystic fibrosis
Genetic disease that causes thick and sticky mucus to accumulate in the lungs and digestive system
Bronchoconstriction
Constriction/blockage of the bronchi
Small volume nebulizer (SVM)
a medical device that converts liquid medication into a fine mist, facilitating inhalation therapy
DVT
Deep Vein Thrombosis, a condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs. It can be serious if the clot breaks loose and travels to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism
Anatomic-physiologic vs pathologic
Anatomic-physiologic is mental status where patient cannot follow instructions. Pathologic includes nausea or vomiting
Someone who collapses from a clot in the pulmonary artery is suffering from:
Pulmonary embolism
Is asthma COPD
No
What kind of patients should not receive AED
Patients where the heart and surrounding muscles have been damaged
Primary electrical disturbance causing cardiac arrest
Ventricular fibrillation
