Chapter 22- Respiratory System Flashcards
Nasal cavity
Hair and mucus filter air, thin layer of blood vessels warms it
Pharynx
Connection between nasal and oral cavity, uvula closes off nasal cavity when swallowing, ear canal entrance location
Larynx
“Voice box” vocal cords, Adam’s apple, epiglottis
Trachea
“Wind pipe” air transport, cartilage formed into C shapes to keep trachea open
Bronchi
Branch from trachea into two parts (one for each lung)
Bronchioles
Smaller air conducting passages
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs surrounded by capillaries, area of gas exchange
Why is there a size difference between the left and right lung?
The left lung which has two lobes, compared to the right lung, which has three lobes, sits directly in front of the heart
Diaphragm
Muscle that lungs rest on
Intercostal muscles
Muscles between the ribs
What happens when inhaling?
Intercostal muscles and diaphragm contract, lung volume increases, pressure decreases
What happens when exhaling?
Intercostal muscles and diaphragm relax, lung volume decreases, and pressure increases
What is the point of the respiratory system?
To gain useable energy and to get rid of carbon dioxide
