Chapter 22 Flashcards
What solution should be used to disinfect lenses that contact the eye?
1:10 dilution of bleach and water or 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
The tip must be soaked for 5-30 minutes and then run under tap water for 5 minutes before use. The bleach should be changed at least once a day and the peroxide twice a day.
Care of the phoropter should include what step?
Authorized maintenance every 2 years.
Alcohol and cleaning solutions should never be used on any of the lenses.
What instrument is used to examine the entire retina in stereopsis?
Indirect Opthalmoscope
Indirects are headsets with a bulb light source and binocular magnifying lenses attached for viewing. The Ophthalmologist uses uses handheld condensing lenses +20diopters to get a magnified, but inverted image of the retina.
What should the ophthalmic medical assistant do when assisting in a laser work area?
Goggles
Laser is an acronym for Light Amoplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. Lasers are extremely intense beams of light used to affect tissue.
The potential acuity meter is helpful for determining potential visual acuity in patients with what condition?
Cataracts.
PAM can show what a cataract pt’s BCV could be and results may indicate whether or not the Pt has other ocular conditions.
The potential acuity meter is helpful for determining potential visual acuity in patients with what condition?
Cataracts
The device uses a pinpoint light source that projects a transilluminated through a 0.1mm opening. It helps show what one’s best corrected vision would be like without cataracts and can alert if other eye conditions are dictating poor vision.
What precaution should be taken when caring for instrument light bulbs?
Handle new light bulbs with lens tissue paper to avoid contact with finger oils
Oils can etch once the bulb heats up diminishing effectiveness and life. If a bulb is touched, use photographic lens-cleaning fluid.
What components are part of the lens meter unit?
Focusing eyepiece, lens holder, light source, adjustment knobs
Lensmeter or lensometer is used to determine prescription of gls or cl. It can define the optical center, axis of cylindrical lens, the presence and direction of a lens prism, and the power of bifocal or trifocals.
What should be done in front of the patient prior to starting the exam?
Washing hands.
What is the most accurate method for measuring IOP?
Goldman applanation tonometer.
Goldmann consists of a biprism in an eyepiece that flattens a small area of the cornea and gives pressure in 10mm Hg United, calibrated by an adjustment knob.
The use of what lens requires contact with the eye?
Goldmann 3-mirror and Koeppe.
They are fundus and gonio lenses used to examine inner aspects of the eye c great magnification.
