Q

Cholinergic-blocking drugs

A

Drugs that block the action of ACh and substances similar to ACh at receptor sites (in the PSNS) in the brain - they inhibit nerve transmission

  • Also called Anticholinergics
  • Atropine (primarily used for CV disorders), scopolamine, glycopyrrolate are some examples
  • Drug effects include dilate pupils, relax the smooth muscle of the GI tract, decreased GI secretions and motility, dilate airways, increased constriction of the bladder sphincters, decreased muscle rigidity and tremors (inhibit the PSNS)
  • Adverse effects include increased HR, dilated pupils, restlessness, decreased salivation, decreased gastric secretions and motility
  • Used to treat asthma, COPD, irritable bowel disease, acute pacretitis, incontinence, etc
