The VPNC must be contacted prior to its use.

The Captain must retain all receipts and paper work regarding the purchase and submit these documents to Fleet Admin within 45 days. A note should be made on the Voyage Report and/or CSR that the credit card was used. Failure to submit the documentation will result in the full amount being deducted from the crew members salary.

EVITA is an interactive system to communicate roster information to flight and cabin crew. Crew are encouraged to check EVITA in the 12 hours before ETD, but are required to call EVITA:

Within 30 min of the scheduled pick-up from their residence, to check for flight delay and/or roster change information. If required, Crew Control will have changed the pick up arrangements;

Within the 24 hours prior to recommencement of duty, following leave, sick leave or extended days off;

After 1800 hours on the evening before any available day.

What are your actions during late transport?

A

If the transport has not arrived 10 minutes after the expected time, crew members shall report this to Central Services. If after 20 minutes, the transport has still not arrived, a crew member should take prompt action to make his own transport arrangements.

20.5.2 Transport – Outstations
Emirates provides ground transportation at all outstations for operating and positioning crews and crew members on official Company business. Coordination is by via the outstation staff. This transportation is not intended for family members of crew, crew on leave, or crew on private visits. Use of crew transport for these purposes will be on a space available basis only and subject to the Commander’s approval.

If extra or positioning crews require additional transport in excess of that provides, the use of local taxis is authorised. Taxi charges will be repaid on submission of a receipt.

20.6.3 Damage/Replacement
Instances of lost or damaged baggage should be reported to the station staff immediately. At outstations, facilities exist to obtain an advance to acquire the minimum amount of clothing and other necessary articles.

Uniform stores can arrange repairs to suitcases damaged whilst on duty. A temporary replacement is normally available until the original is repaired.

What countries prohibit alcohol and therefore what are the measures required?

The importation of alcohol into certain countries, in particular Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and Iran, is prohibited. The authorities in these countries are liable to take punitive measures against companies whose aircraft are searched and where unbounded liquor is discovered.

Even though you are not on duty, you are expected to represent the company.

Layovers provide crew with opportunities to relax and meet with colleagues in a relaxed atmosphere; however it must be stressed that the principal aspect of the layover is crew rest and crew must meet their individual responsibility to be properly rested and prepared for their next duty.

Crew members are encouraged to assist their colleagues apply best practice when balancing rest and relaxation on layovers. Commanders and First Officers are expected to take a leadership role on these issues and act responsibly, while also providing common sense guidance on the layover rest plan for the entire crew.

20.7.4 General Conduct at Outstations
All crew shall follow local procedures for accommodation and crew meals;

They shall refrain from any action or behaviour that could lead to complaints from the hotel management, and settle all personal bills before leaving the hotel;

Justified complaints shall be brought to the attention of the hotel management by the Commander, and also forwarded to the Company through the proper channels;

It is standard practice that hotel management are advised that crew lists may not be issued to any person other than the Captain and Purser of that crew;

Crew members should refrain from having mail and packages delivered to the hotels for their collection.

Can a crew member stay away for the hotel?

A flight crew member wishing to stay away overnight from the company provided accommodation must first obtain permission from the Commander. In the case of cabin crew, the purser must grant permission. If the permission has been granted, a crew member may stay with friends or relatives in the same city as the crew accommodation. Flight crew members staying away overnight from the hotel shall leave their address and contact telephone number with the Commander and with the Purser for cabin crew;

If there is an interruption to the normal duty what precautions should you take?

20.7.6
Crew members should be aware that if they operate to an outstation on an aircraft that has a major or otherwise significant unserviceability and a crew change is likely to take place, they should go straight to the hotel and commence the required rest period. Delays in the rectification may require the inbound crew to operate the return service with minimum rest.

Note this includes the use of alcohol. You should refrain as you may get called on short notice.

20.12.1 Passenger Boarding and Ramp Transfer
It is Emirates policy not to inconvenience a large number of passengers to accommodate a few. However in compassionate or urgent cases, a Commander may use his discretion to delay a flight departure, unless there are operational reasons (e.g. deteriorating weather).

A Commander shall delay a departure when requested to do so by the VPNC.

20.12.2 	Class of Travel – Passenger Upgrading
The responsibility of upgrading or downgrading a passenger’s class of travel is delegated to the Purser by the Commander.

Once on board, a passenger may be upgraded to a higher class of travel if space is available, and upon payment of the difference in fare cost. Payment must be made by credit card.

The Commander may also authorise upgrades for passengers for operational reasons. In all such cases, details of the upgrade must be submitted on a Captain’s Special Report. This facility should be used sparingly and in cases where the upgrade is to minimize a service failure on the part of EK. Prior coordination with the Purser and/or Airport Services is required where practical and time permits.

20.12.2 Class of Travel – Passenger Upgrading
An on-board upgrade should only be made to bonafide revenue passengers, and are not permitted for EK or OAL staff passengers.

Who is responsible for handling disruptive pax and when?

20.12.3 Passenger Misconduct – General
The Purser and the Senior Cabin Crew Member shall be involved in all stages of a disruptive passenger incident (or potential incident) on-board, whether at the stand, during taxi or in flight, and the Commander shall be kept fully informed;

The OM-E contains detailed cabin crew procedures and policies for the handling of disruptive passengers, in Section 300/315;

The Commander will delegate the Purser and the Senior Cabin Crew Member to deal with a disruptive passenger. The assistance of able-bodied passengers may also be requested if required. Under no circumstances shall flight crew become directly involved in any direct contact with a disruptive passenger;

Before offloading a disruptive pax, what must be done?

A

20.12.3 Passenger Misconduct – General
Where circumstances allow, before taking final action under these procedures, the concerned staff should display the appropriate form of notice to the disruptive passenger. A verbal warning must be given to the disruptive passenger;

What types of disruptive behavior may result in warnings or offload?

A

The following acts or conditions violate the law. Any person violating any of these or any other law or regulation may be removed from the flight and prosecuted to the extent of the law. A report should be submitted accordingly upon completion of the flight;

Apparent intoxication.

Being obviously under the influence of drugs/psychoactive substances (except under proper medical care).

Threatening another passenger or a crew member with physical violence.

Indecent exposure or proposals.

Theft.

Carrying an unauthorised deadly or dangerous weapon, either concealed or unconcealed.

Interfering with the safety of a crew member or of the aircraft.

Conveying false information concerning the flight and its safety.

Committing or attempting to commit an act of aerial piracy.

Must you alert authorities to a disruptive pax?

A

As there are many different types of incidents, the Commander shall use his discretion in deciding when an incident should be referred to the Authorities;
The Commander is responsible for ensuring that this policy is applied and that appropriate written reports are submitted by members of the crew. For this reason, the Purser shall ensure that all incidents of this nature are fully documented by themselves and by any crew members who are involved in an incident or are witness to it;

Is loud offensive language considered assault?

A

20.12.3.1 Abusive or Suggestive Language
Although this type of behaviour is disturbing and offensive, it need not necessarily be a hazard to ground staff, crew or to the safety or security of the aircraft. Provided it does not create the threat of violence or physical attack, it is not considered an assault.

The objective in dealing with incidents of this nature is to calm the passenger down and avoid any confrontation.

Is refusal to follow crew instructions abusive behavior?

A

20.12.3.2 Refusal to Comply with Instructions from Cabin Crew
The refusal of a passenger to comply with the lawful instructions of cabin crew constitutes disruptive behaviour and could, according to the circumstances, endanger the safety and security of the aircraft, crew, the passenger concerned and other passengers.

Examples of such incidents would be a passenger refusing to fasten his seat belt during the time that the seat belt sign is illuminated.

How should you proceed with a drunk pax?

A

20.12.3.4 Drunkenness and Drugs/Psychoactive Substances
Drunkenness is often an underlying cause of disruptive behaviour. If a passenger exhibits signs of drunkenness during the flight, crew members shall refuse to serve him any further alcohol and to remove from his tray any unconsumed alcohol.

Use the OME Traffic Light method. And apply the 4D’s when necessary. Then if the situation escalates, deliver a formal warning.

Under no circumstances shall an injection be given to passengers by a cabin crew member.

What are your actions when a pax falls ill during boarding?

A

Delegate this to the purser and ASM, provide for their welfare. If before boarding have the airport medical staff attend, if onboard MedLink should be contacted:

20.12.4.1.1 Before Departure
In the event of a passenger becoming ill or appearing to be unfit to continue the journey when about to board, on board, the Commander shall seek medical advice ( MedLink) to establish if the passenger is fit to continue. Some Aerodrome medical authorities will give written opinions to indicate that the passenger is fit to continue the journey, but if a written opinion is not available and the Commander is in any doubt, he may offload the passenger.

The Station Manager will assume responsibility for the care of the passenger, on the understanding that Emirates is not responsible for any medical charges incurred by the passenger.

NOTE my actions are to be aware of the situation, ensure my crew is addressing the situation as above, receive written or verbal confirmation from MedLink for safe travel or offload to ASM.

What are your actions when a pax falls ill inflight?

A

20.12.4.1.2 After Departure
In the event of illness or injury to a passenger during flight, the Purser shall report the event to the Commander. The assistance of a physician or a nurse travelling as a passenger should be requested.

To assist crew in dealing with in-flight medical emergencies, MedLink, a 24 hour tele-medical resource company, based in Arizona, can be contacted directly by phone, on 001-602-239-3627 to provide medical advice. The objective behind the use of MedLink is to have the in-flight access to medical expertise whenever required. A doctor or a team of doctors on call can provide advice to help diagnose a medical problem and also advise on whether an enroute diversion is recommended and the most suitable enroute aerodrome for appropriate medical treatment. If the Commander decides that a diversion is necessary he will provide MedLink with the name of the diversion aerodrome and the ETA. MedLink will then take over all arrangements for medical services to meet the aircraft and will arrange for all follow-up treatment of the patient. (Further details are provided in EK/MedLink In-flight Emergency Procedures manual).

In the event there is no doc on board or MedLink can’t be reached, how would you decide on a diversion etc?

A

In the event that no specialist advice is available, the crew shall consider the following symptoms in deciding to continue the flight or land as soon as possible:

Fever, perspiration or swelling;

Acute skin rash with or without fever;

Severe diarrhea or vomiting;

Any other apparent symptoms.

If the condition of the passenger is critical, the Commander shall contact the nearest suitable aerodrome for landing and ask for preparation for the care of the sick passenger.

When requesting assistance from the aerodrome of intended landing, the following details shall be relayed if possible:

Name of passenger;

Illness (if known) or injury;

Request for a doctor and/or ambulance;

Details of the Commanders actions should be included on the Voyage Report on return to Dubai.

There are two types of medical kits on board, what are they and what are the rules of use?

A

FAK - first aid kit

EMK - emergency medical kit

20.12.4.1.3 Emergency Medical Kit
In a medical emergency, cabin crew may open the Emergency Medical Kit without first seeking permission from the Commander.

Any item administered out of the emergency medical kit shall be in accordance with the OM-E.

The Purser shall make an entry in the Cabin/IFE Log and inform the Commander when the seal on the Emergency Medical Kit has been broken, so that the Commander may make an entry in the Voyage Report.

The Commander shall notify the destination aerodrome, requesting an ambulance to meet the aircraft. On arrival, in conjunction with the Purser, he shall complete a report in duplicate.

Crew shall not request additional meal uplifts.

If pilots feel that the meals loaded for a specific flight or sector are inadequate, then this should be reported, either by way of a Voyage Report, or a Captain’s Special Report.
