Chapter 2: The Philosophical Approach Flashcards
What are two branches of philosophy we concern ourselves with?
Metaphysics (nature of reality) and Epistemology (study of knowledge)
What is the mind-body problem?
The mind-body problem addresses how mental properties are linked to physical properties.
What is Monism?
The belief that there is only one kind of substance in the universe
What is Dualism?
The belief that both mental and physical substances are possible (Plato)
What is Idealism?
Idealism is a form of Monism. It supports that there is only the mental realm that is a result of God’s experience (Berkeley)
What is Solipsism?
Solipsism is a from of Monism. It supports that there is only the mental realm that is a result of every individual’s experience.
What is Physicalism or Materialism?
Physicalism or Materialism is a form of Monism. It supports that everything that exists is physical. Therefore, the operations of the mind are simply seen as operations of the brain. (Aristotle, Democritus)
What is Reductive and Non Reductive Physicalism?
Reductive Physicalism supports that all physical processes in the brain are able to account for all mentalistic levels of description.
Non Reductive Physicalism supports that one cannot do away with mentalistic description.
What is Parallelism?
Parallelism is a form of Dualism. It supports that the mind and body are distinct and they don’t interact with each other.
What is Epiphenomenalism?
Epiphenomenalism is a form of Dualism. It supports that the mind is like a side-effect to brain’s operations.
What is Interactionism?
Interactionism is a form of Dualism. It supports that the body affects the mind as much as the mind affects the body.
What is Functionalism?
Functionalism supports that mental states might not be reduced to any particular physical state. This means that there might be a wide variety of possible physical states capable of producing any given mental state. Minds that are not based on brains can exist. (for example in computers)
What is the Qualia phenomenon?
Qualia phenomenon is the phenomenal property of experience (not as “conscious” as an actual experience)
What is Determinism?
Determinism is the view that all physical actions are caused or determined by the sum total of all prior events.
What are three implications of Hume’s billiard balls model?
Determinism, Replication, Prediction
