Culture
A dynamic value system of learned attitudes and assumptions, conventions, beliefs and rules that permit members of a group to relate to one another and the world.
Communication

Cultural Identity
The way one’s culture of birth influences a person’s belief and self concept.
Individualistic Culture
Characterized by individualism, which is the prioritization, or emphasis of the individual over the entire group. (American culture fits within this category)
Collectivist Culture
~Seventy percent of world cultures fit into this category, including American Indian/Native cultures.
~Emphasize the needs and goals of the group as a whole over the needs and wishes of each individual.
Collectivist Identity
Individuals define themselves and others by their group membership; keen awareness of group needs and feelings; individuals are expected contribute to and take care of the group, even if it means giving up personal plans or goals.
Individualist Identity
Individuals define themselves and others by their immediate personal achievements; feelings are focused on the individual rather than the group; independence is highly valued and individuals are expected to take care of themselves.
Collectivist time
Based on a gut sense of readiness; strong reinforcement for the process and stopping “when done”; normal to take one’s time to think, ruminate and fully consider a proposal or idea before responding.
Individualist time
Rude if others arrive late or the meeting is delayed because time is based on the clock and the calendar; strong reinforcement for starting and finishing “on time”; a person is seen as evasive or untrustworthy if they take too long to respond to an idea or if there are frequent long pauses in an interaction.
Components of Culture:
A complex whole, including knowledge, beliefs, art, morals, laws, customs and any other capabilities and habits acquired as a member of the culture.
~ Can be divided into three subsets of Normas and values - material, behavioral, and cognitive.
