Considerations for Ed. Settings
Goal for mainstream ed is independence, empowerment, integration
Interp. is not an Aide.
PA need 3.5 EIPA score
Responsibilities for Ed. Interp.
Communication
Vary depending on age, grade,intellectual capacity of student
Should not interfere with teachers’ authority–teaching, disciplining, referrals, parent/student meetings
Best Practices for Ed. Interp
Regularly scheduled breaks and lunch period
1 paid prep period
Provided a team interp when indicated

Should be provided if reg interp. is ill or off
Only during an emergency, one-time-only should a Deaf student be without a qualified
Pay Rate and Benefits
Commensurate to other professionals in the bldg
May be offered by the district or IU, depending on the employer
Expect to earn and maintain your professional title. e.g., stay late for parent conferences, attend workshops, etc.
Employment related settings may include:
Job interview New Employee orientation Training Union or staff mtg. Performance evals Office events--parties, recognition ceremonies, farewell receptions
