dual boot installation
A process performed by Sysprep to prepare a computer running Windows 7for imaging. The computer SID, computer name, user profi les, and hardware information areremoved during generalization.
generalization
This confi guration pass is performed when Sysprep is run togeneralize Windows 7.
generalize confi guration pass
A low-level system driver in Windows 7 that controlscommunication between Windows 7 and the computer hardware.
Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL)
A collection of fi les captured using ImageX and stored in an image fi le.
image
An image-based installation that uses ImageX to apply an image of anoperating system to a computer. The image can include applications as well as the operating system.
image-based installation
A fi le that stores one or more images. The size of an image fi le is minimizedthrough the use of single-instance storage when a fi le exists in multiple images.

A new command-line tool for managing WIM images.

The second confi guration pass that is performed afterthe Windows image has been copied to the local hard drive. This confi guration pass appliespackages such as security updates and service packs before Windows 7 is started.
offl ineServicing confi guration pass
An offl ine update is applied to Windows 7 during installation before Windows7 is started. The packages used for offl ine updates are supplied by Microsoft.
