Chapter 2: Patterns of Life Flashcards
What is meant by the levels of biological organization?
One level represents a certain degree of size and complexity or body structures.
How many levels are in the pyramid of life.
12
List the levels of the pyramid of life.
Subatomic particles Atoms Molecules Organelles Cells Tissues Organs Organ systems Organism Population Community Ecosystem
What does the subatomic particles level contain?
Protons, neutrons, and electrons.
What is the nucleus of atoms made of?
Protons and neutrons.
What are the electrons doing in the Rutherford-Bohr Model?
Orbiting the nucleus at exceptionally high speeds.
When many atoms are stuck together through chemical bonds what are they called?
Molecules.
How are chemical bonds made?
They happen when electrons are shared between atoms to form molecules.
What is a molecule called when is has carbon?
An organic molecule.
What word means little organs?
Organelles.
What do organelles do?
They are small organs that carry out specific functions within the cell.
What does the nucleus of a cell contain?
DNA.
What are particular sections of DNA called?
Genes.
What is protein synthesis?
The making of proteins usually done by genes.
What is a cell?
A cell is a structure made up of organelles.
What is tissue?
Tissue is made up of similar cell connect by an intercellular material.
List the basic or primary types of tissues.
Epithelial tissue
Muscle tissue
Connective tissue
Nervous tissue
What is epithelial tissue usually?
Skin.
How much intercellular material does epithelial tissue have?
Little or none.
What tissue connects body parts most of the times?
Connective tissue.
What is muscle tissue?
Muscle tissue is tissue mostly made of muscle fibers which relax or contracts, therefore, performing an action.
What is so major about nervous tissue?
It ability to communicate and control the body’s internal environment.
What is an organ?
An organ is a collection of two or more tissues to perform a body function.
What is an organ system?
An organ system is a collection of two or more organ to perform a complex body function.
From where does a population start?
Through the breeding or a male and female of the same species.
How does a community differ from an ecosystem?
A community includes only different populations or species, unlike an ecosystem which includes rivers, mountains, and communities.
