Chapter 2 (Matter) Flashcards
What’s matter?
Anything that has mass & takes up space.
What’s energy?
the ability to do work or to produce heat
What’s a physical property?
Anything that you can observe or measure. (Red Paper, Density, Luster)
What’s a chemical property?
Describes how “it” (matter) can behave. (Melts, Flammability)
What’s a physical change?
The matter retains internal properties but looks physically different.
What’s a chemical change?
= Chemical Reaction, a new substance is formed/
What are the Phases of Matter?
Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma*
What’s the Law of Conservation?
Matter can not be created neither destoryed.
What are the four key identifiers of a chemical change?
Color Change, Temperature Change, Precipitate Forms, Gas Forms (All Unforced)
What is an intensive property?
It does not matter how much of the substance you have, the property will not change. (Boiling, Heating, Melting Points)
What’s an extensive property?
Amount of substance is dependent for the property. (Mass, Volume)
What is the ratio for density?
M/V
What are the two sorted groups of matter?
Pure Substances & Mixtures
What are the two subgroups of pure substances?
Elements & Compounds
What are mixtures made out of?
Pure Substances
