What are the four elements?
Air, Fire, water and earth.
Empedocles
Greek philosopher. Believed that matter was composed of four elements.
What is an Element?
A substance that not be broken down into any other element by chemical or physical means.
Periodic Table
100+ element, each with a two letter abbreviation.
Particle Theory of Matter
A theory that all matter is atoms.
Nucleus
A positively charges center of an atom.
Chemical Bond
A force of attraction between two atoms.
Molecule
a group of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds.
Water Molecule
Grouping of one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms.
What is a compound?
a substance made up two more elements that chemically bonded in a set ratio.
Chemical Formula
a method of representing the elements in a compound that the ratio of atoms.
Mixtures
Two or more substances that are not chemically bonded.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture where the different parts are visible and can separated. Example: a salad.
Homogenous Mixture
A mixture where the different parts are not visible and hard to separate. Example: air
How to separate mixtures?
Distillation, Evaporation, Magnetic Attraction and Filtration.
