Chapter 2/Lesson 1 Viruses Flashcards
Virus
Tiny, non-living particle that enters and reproduces inside a living cell.
How do viruses reproduce?
Need to enter a host cell. Use their protein code to get into a cell, then use their own DNA to tell the cell to reproduce.
Why are viruses considered non-living?
Do not respond to their surrounding? Can not take in or product food. Do not use their own energy to grow.
What is a host?
An organism that provides a source of energy for a virus or another organism.
What is a parasite?
An organism that lives on or in a host, and causes it harm. Almost all viruses destroy their host cells.
Bacteriophage
A virus that infects other viruses. Its name mean bacteria eater.
Units of measurement to measure a virus
Nanometer. Smallest virus are 20 nm in diameter. Largest are up to 200 nm in diameter.
How do Viruses multiply?
Enter a cell and tell the cell function to reproduce using its own DNA as the instructions.
Surface Proteins
Parts of a virus outer coat that allows it to enter a host cell.
Cold Virus
Can only enter human cells in the nose or throat. Unable to enter other cells in the body.
Gene Therapy
A medial process that uses viruses to deliver treatments into human cells. Used for Cystic-Fibrosis.
Cystic-Fibrosis
Disease that impacts the human body’s ability because they lack the genetic material to keep their lungs functioning.
Vacine
A substance that is used in the human body to destroy viruses. Weakened versions of a virus that allow the human immune system to strengthen.
