Chapter 2 Lesson 1 Flashcards
What is an atom ?
The basic unit of matter.
What are atoms made up of ?
Subatomic particles (protons, neutrons, electrons)
What charge does a proton have ?
Positive
What charge does an electron have?
Negative
What charge does a neutron have ?
Neutral (no charge)
What is the outer part of an atom called (3 things)
- Electron cloude
- Shell
- Energy level
What is the inner part of the atom called ?
Nucleus
What is the atomic number ?
Number of protons in an atom. & entity of same element
When is an atom electrically neutral ?
When it has the same number of protons and electrons.
What is a chemical element ?
Pure substance that consists entirely of one type of atom
What is an isotope ?
Atoms of the same element with same number of protons and electrons but different number of neutrons.
What is a chemical compound ?
Substance that is formed by chemical combination of 2 or more elements in definite proportion.
What about a compound is different from the elements they’re made of ?
Physical and chemical properties
What holds together atoms in a compound
Chemical bonds.
What is a valance electron ?
Electron available to form a bond
What are the three types of bonds ?
Ionic bond
Covalent bond
Van deal Waal force
What forms the nucleus ?
Strong forces that bind protons and neutrons together
What is the mass number ?
The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus.
What are the main kinds of chemical bonds ?
Ionic and covalent
What is an ionic bond ?
One or more electrons are transferred from one atom to another
What happens to an atom that looses an electron ?
Becomes positive.
What happens to an atom that gains an electron ?
It becomes negative.
What is an ion?
Positively and negatively charged atoms
What is a single covalent bond ?
When an atom shares two electrons
What is a double bond ?
When atom shares 4 electrons.
What is a triple bond ?
When atom shares 6 electrons
What is a molecule ?
Structure that results when atoms are joined together by covalent bonds.
What is the smallest unit of most compounds ?
Molecule
What is Van De Waal’s force ?
Intermolecular force of attraction that holds molecules together.
