Chapter 2: Ecosystem Flashcards
What is a producer?
A producer is an organism that produces its own food through photosynthesis.
Most plants are producers.
What is a consumer?
A consumer is an organism that eats another organism.
What is a primary consumer?
Primary consumers are herbivores and omnivores that eat producers.
What is a secondary consumer?
A secondary consumer is an omnivore and carnivore that eats the primary consumer.
What is a tertiary consumer?
A tertiary consumer is a secondary carnivore that eats a secondary consumer. The size of a tertiary consumer is usually bigger than a primary or secondary consumer.
What is a decomposer?
A decomposer is an organism that breaks down dead animals and plants into simpler materials or nutrients.
What is the purpose of food chain?
A food chain can be used to show the feeding relationship between organisms.
What is a food web?
The interconnection of a few food chains
Where is energy lost at?
Energy is lost in the form of heat energy or chemical energy through undigested food or faeces.
What is a nutrient cycle?
Nutrients are obtained from a balanced ecosystem and used by living things. Then, the nutrients are returned to the environment to be used again

What is a habitat?
A habitat is the natural surroundings or home of an organism.
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a few communities that live together in one habitat and have mutual interaction with one another, including all the non-living components
What is a species?
A species is a group of organisms that have common characteristics and can reproduce to breed offsprings
What is a population?
A population is a group of organisms of the same species that live in the same habitat
What is a community?
A community is a few populations of different organisms that live together in one habitat and have mutual interaction with one another.
How can an ecosystem be balanced?
An ecosystem is said to be balanced if the living organisms and non-living components in the environment are in a state of harmony without any external interference.
State 5 interactions between organisms.
Symbiosis
- Mutualism
- Commensalism
- Parasitism
Prey-predator
Competition
What is biological control?
Biological control is a method that uses organisms that are natural predators, parasites or pathogens to reduce the number of pests in an area.
What are the factors that influence population size in an ecosystem?
Disease
Presence of predators
Source of food
Change of weather
