Chapter 1 : Biodiversity Flashcards
What is Biodiversity?
The diversity of organisms, whether microorganisms, animals or plants
Biodiversity exists as a result of the diversity of habitat and climate
What are the importance of biodiversity?
Source of food
→Animals and plants supply food to humans.
Balance of nature
→The cycle of nutrients, pollination and interaction between organisms create balance in nature.
Recreational nature
→Areas that are rich in biodiversity can be developed as recreational places.
Medical
→Herbs are widely used in the manufacture of medicines and cosmetics.
Raw materials for industry
→Timber, bamboo and rattan are examples of forest products that are used to make musical instruments, furniture and to build buildings.
Education
→Humans increase knowledge and create new technology through scientific research on microorganisms, animals and plants.
What are invertebrates?
Invertebrates are animals without a backbone.
What are vertebrates?
Vertebrates are animals with a backbone.
State 5 classes of vertebrates.
Mammals Fish Amphibians Reptiles Birds
State the classifications of plants.
Plants are classified as non-flowering and flowering plants.
What do non-flowering plants consist of?
Non-flowering plants consist of moss, fern and conifer
What do flowering plants consist of?
Flowering plants consist of monocotyledon and dicotyledon
State the root of monocotyledon and dicotyledon.
Monocotyledon: Fibrous root
Dicotyledon: Tap root
State the stem of monocotyledon and dicotyledon.
Monocotyledon: Non-woody stem
Dicotyledon: Woody stem
State the leaf of monocotyledon and dicotyledon.
Monocotyledon: Parallel vein
Dicotyledon: Network vein
Give some examples of monocotyledon and dicotyledon.
Monocotyledon: Paddy and maize plants
Dicotyledon: Tomato plant and durian tree
