chapter 2 DNA Flashcards
ATP, water and DNA
what are the 4 bases, and which base are they paired with
Adenine and Thymine
Cytosine and Guanine
which bases are purines and which are pyrimidines?
Adenine and Guanine are purines because they have a double ring, Cytosine and Thymine have single ring so they are pyrimidines.
difference between DNA and RNA
DNA is found in long strands, and found only in the nucleus, but RNA is found in very short strands in the cytoplasm.
what bonds hold dinucleotides together?
phosphodiester bonds
structure of DNA?
double helix, antiparallel strands
structure of RNA?
single strand
which base is only found in RNA
Uracil
which base does uracil pair with
Adenine
what does ATP stand for?
Adesonine-tri-phosphate
what is ATP essential for?
metabolism, energy release in a cell
what is ATP comprised of?
Adenine (nitrogenous base)
Ribose sugar
3 phosphate ions
which enzyme is used to create ATP from ADP
ATP synthase
ATP + water =
ADP +Pi (energy)
which two enzymes are involved in DNA replication
DNA helicase and DNA polymerase
what is phosphorylation
when the phosphate ion that has been broken off an ATP molecule bonds with other molecules to make them more reactive
