CHAPTER 2 - AIR-TO-AIR REFUELING Flashcards
What is considered a “viable divert”?
Less than 1 hour for receiver aircraft from the planned route, but can be waived to 2 hours at the CO’s discretion
Where is defensive refueling normally conducted?
Within the protective boundaries of an integrated air defense system, using a static AAR track
What is the “push method” in AAR?
When is this method useful?
What are some shortfalls of this method?
Entails launching and recovering tanker aircraft on a planned schedule
When receiver fuel requirements and AAR times are predictable and/or when the AAR track is relatively far from the launch/recovery airfield.
Requirement for many C-130s and the potential for gaps in AAR coverage during surges in receiver fuel requirements. Tends to be inefficient in that aircraft on station may have significant off-load remaining when scheduled relief aircraft arrive.
What is the “pull method” in AAR?
What are some shortfalls?
Launching aircraft in time to relieve off-going aircraft without creating a gap in AAR availability.
Reliance on accurate information flow. Limited to use on tracks that are close by, in order to be responsive.
Planners should establish an ARIP a minimum of __ NM prior to HAAR and __ NM for TAAR to the ARCP.

What can cause drogue oscillations?
Convection, wind shear, and the physical condition of the drogues (torn canopy).
How can you reduce drogue oscillations?
By adjusting altitude, airspeed, or AOB.
Increasing airspeed and AOB will reduce oscillations due to the resulting increase of drag and/or G forces.
Where is the HAAR RV altitude in relation to the refueling altitude?
500 feet above or below
When do you pull power levers to flight idle during HAAR rendezvouses?
- 2 DME in trail of lead receiver
1. 2 DME will be have to be increased approx. 0.1 for every 1000 ft above 2000 ft MSL due to the air density decreasing
HAAR
Can two receivers disconnect and fly in the astern position simultaneously?
No
HAAR
What AOB do you want to use in a turn?
15 degrees or less
HAAR
Can receivers plug in a turn at night?
No
HAAR
What kind of terrain analysis should you conduct?
When is the ideal time of day to refuel?
Because of the possibility of rotor blade contact with the drogue during periods of thermal turbulence, the area identified should be flat and with a consistent subsoil to keep uneven heating of the ground to a minimum.
Turbulence is less likely during the morning and evening hours.
TAAR
What altitude are ospreys limited to when carrying passengers and why?
13000 ft because they are not pressurized
TAAR
What temps do you want to avoid and why?
Avoid visible moisture at temps lower than 4 degrees C due to the limited anti-ice/de-ice capabilities of the Osprey
