AFI 11-231 CARP PROCEDURES Flashcards
What is the relationship with drop altitude and drift effect?
The higher the drop altitude, the greater the drift effect per knot of wind
What is PAV
How do you compute it?
Pressure Altitude Variation
pressure difference, in ft, between MSL and the standard datum plane.
computed by taking difference between DZ altimeter setting and 29.92 and multiplying by 10
PAV is positive if altimeter setting is less than 29.92 and negative if greater than 29.92
What is the planned interval between each parachutist?
1 second
An experienced parachutist can maneuver approx ____ ft horizontally for each ____ ft of free fall?
An experienced parachutist can maneuver approx 500 ft horizontally for each 1000 ft of free fall
What parachutes are HVCDS normally rigged with?
a ring-slot parachute
What is deployment altitude?
altitude where full parachute deployment occurs and a constant rate of descent is established
What is actuation altitude?
Actuation altitude (for manual ripcord pull) is normally considered to be 500 ft above the deployment altitude
HARP
What winds are computed?
Ballistic winds are computed using winds for every 2000 ft from drop altitude down to (but not including) actuation altitude, since that is where free-fall ends
Deployed winds are computed using winds for every 1000 ft or less from actuation to surface
What glide ratio and forward speed do square parachutes have?
8:1 glide ratio
forward speed of 20.8 kts
MT1-X
MT1-S
MT1
Define Safety Factor
a safety buffer from exit to assembly for parachutists under canopy and for assembly at a certain altitude once the “flight” arrives over the DZ
normally 2000 ft (1000 for assembly and 1000 for approach)
When should winds NOT be averaged mathematically?
if difference in direction exceed 90 degrees
or
difference in velocity exceeds 15 kts
use vectorial average instead
