Buccal
Mouth cavity between jaw and cheek
Inhalation
Drug administration route in which the patient inhaled drugs orally or nasally
Intradermal
Pertaining to the dermis area within the upper laters of the skin
Intramuscular

Any preventable event or activity that can cause inappropriate medication use or patient harm
Parenteral
Administration of a substance such as a drug by any route other than through the gastrointestinal system
Standard precautions
Recommendation that gloves and or other protective gear be worn when touching any blood or body fluids, mucous membranes, or any broken skin area
Subcutaneous
Under the skin or dermis layer in the fatty tissue layer
Sublingual
In the mouth under the tongue
Transdermal
Through the skin
Unit dose
System of drug delivery by which a drug order is filled and medication is dispensed to fill each medication order for a 24 hour period. Each drug dose unit is dispensed in a package labeled with the drug name and dosage
Five rights plus one
1) right patient
2) right drug
3) right dose
4) right route
5) right time
6) right documentation
This type of order is pre-established and approved for use by nurses and other health care providers under specific conditions in the absence of the primary or attending health care provider. They may be drug orders for presurgical/procedure or postsurgical/procedure nursing care. Example: Cefotetan 1 g IV 30 min preoperatively
Standing Order
An order to administer the drug one time only. Example: Valium 10 mg IM at 10:00 AM
Single Order
An order to administer the drug as needed. Example: Percocet 1 to 2 tablets orally every 4 hours PRN for pain
PRN Order
