Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is distribution?
Is a process of moving the drug from the blood stream to site of action
What happens to bioavailabilty of a drug if there is a decreased liver function?
increased bioavailability of a drug, Less drug is destroyed by hepatic metabolism in the presence of liver disorder resulting in toxicity.
Define Bioavailability
Is the % of the administered drug that reaches the systemic circulation
IV adminstered dosages should be smaller or larger than other routes, why?
Smaller, because IV meds have a 100 % bioavailability
What does Protein binding do to drugs?
decreases the concentration of free drug circulation
What type of drug is able to diffuse into tissues?
free drug
Name the common highly protein bound drugs
warfarin, ibuprofen, furosemide, diazepam
Name the common weakly protein bound drugs
gentamicin, metformin, metoprolol , lisinopril
What drugs cross easily in the blood bank barrier
lipid soluble
what are teratogenic effects?
effects from the drug on developing fetus
What is biotransformation?
Metabolism
What do Liver diseases do drugs?
Slows metabolism, and prolongs effects
If there is a liver disease or dystfunction which process will not take place, or not properly function
Metabolism
Whats is CYP450?
a group of enzymes in the livers that break down the drug
What is half life of a drug?
The time it takes for one half of the drug concentration to be eliminated
