Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is a project methodology?
A project methodology is a systemic way to plan, manage, and execute a project, using tools and shit.
What are three terms for the reviews that occur at the end of each phase of a development life cycle?
There are three terms for the end-of-phase review, they are:
- Phase Exit
- Stage Gate
- Kill Point
These are all milestones where the project might get the ax if certain requirements aren’t met.
What is fast tracking, and why is it done?
Fast tracking occurs when a project starts one phase of development before the previous phase has completed. This can be done to reduce a schedule, but can be risky.
What is the first phase of the project life cycle?
The first phase of the project life cycle is to define the project and its goals.
What is the second phase of the project life cycle?
The second phase of the project life cycle is to create a plan for the project, detailing objectives, resources, and controls needed for it to succeed.
What is the third phase of the project life cycle?
The third phase of the project life cycle is to execute the project plan.
What is a project methodology?
A project methodology is a defined system which allows us to plan, manage, and execute work to be completed.
What are the advantages of using a methodology?
A methodology is already built on best-practices, which eliminates the need to figure things out. They also provide a common language for project workers to use, provide understood roles for stakeholders, and more.
Describe the project life cycle?
The project life cycle is the birth, growth, and conclusion of a project. It has five stages:
- Define Project Goal
- Plan Project
- Execute Project Plan
- Close Project
- Evaluate Project
What are phase exits, stage gates, and kill points? What purpose do they serve?
Phase exits, stage exits, and kill points are all milestones within a project that take a look at the overall project and determine if it should be “killed”.
Describe the “Define Project Goal” phase of the project life cycle.
The project goal phase begins when someone comes up with an idea for a project, and a project goal is defined from that. The goal should allow us to determine easily when it’s been met (i.e. should have some measure of success.)
Describe the “Plan Project” phase of the project life cycle.
The plan project phase is exactly as it sounds, where the project is planned out, determining objectives, resources (like people, tech, etc), and controls (methods for controlling resources).
Describe the “Execute Project Plan” phase of the
project life cycle.
The execute project plan phase is when the plan is when the plan is followed in order to deliver on the project’s goals. This is when the controls are used to manage resources. At the end, the project is implemented/delivered.
Describe the “Close and Evaluate” phases of the
project life cycle.
The close and evaluate phase is the end of the project, when the goals are ratified and signed off on, resources are released, and a postmortem review is done.
What is Project Integration Management?
Project integration management focuses on ensuring that the changes and integration caused by the project are well-handled.
