Chapter 10 Flashcards
Define leadership. What’s its role in managing a project?
Leadership is the act or art of setting a course, inspiring and motivating others, and acting as a role model.
What is management and leadership, and how do they differ?
Management and leadership are two very different things. Management focuses in on day-to-day processes and policies, bringing order and structure. Leadership focuses more on the intangible, vision, change, motivation, setting direction, aligning people, and so on.
What is the first approach to exemplary leadership?
The first approach to exemplary leadership is to model it; that is, do things the way you want them done, consistently. Word AND deed are important here.
What is the second approach to exemplary leadership?
The second approach to exemplary leadership is “inspiration”. This means having an exciting vision, and being able to get others excited about it too, not through monologue, but dialogue.
What is the third approach to exemplary leadership?
The third approach to exemplary leadership is known as “challenging the process”, but it is more or less the ability to recognize good thinking, and going against the status quo to make it happen. Innovating and pursuing innovation, a better way of doing things.
What is the fourth approach to exemplary leadership?
The fourth approach to exemplary leadership is found in enabling their subordinates, developing an environment of collaboration, where the subordinates feel competent, empowered, and motivated. A leader breeds other leaders.
What is the fifth approach to exemplary leadership?
The fifth approach to exemplary leadership is “encouraging the heart”, or as I’d call it, rallying the troops. Seeing when fatigue is setting in and bolstering morale, through genuine emotional investment. Nothing rote or shallow.
What is the first leadership style?
The first leadership style is the coercive style, which is the “one-way street” style of management, wherein orders are passed down from the top to the workers, who do exactly what they’re told. This can have a negative impact, obstructing new ideas, and often killing motivation. This works well to get things started quickly, though.
What is the second leadership style?
The second leadership style is the authoritative style. The authoritative style is the generally most-used style, where the leader sets the direction, but allows their followers to determine the methods they use to get there. This won’t work well with inexperienced leaders with experienced followers.
What is the third leadership style?
The third leadership style is the affiliative style. The affiliative style builds strong connections between leader and team, the leader focusing on team-member happiness and building up loyalty. It’s good at bringing people together, but sucks at creating a solid structure.
What is the fourth leadership style?
The fourth leadership style is the democratic style. This style is exactly what you’d think, with the leader asking for input from his subordinates. This increases morale, and can bring people together, but only if there’s not too much division in the first place.
What is the fifth leadership style?
The fifth leadership style is the pace-setting style. This is a breakneck style, focusing on performance and singling out poor performers, while setting a high performance bar themselves.
What is the sixth leadership style?
The sixth leadership style is the coaching style. The coaching style invests time and effort into finding subordinates’ strengths and developing long-term plans for them to grow. Only works when people are willing to be coached.
