Q

Element

A
  • the simplest form of matter that has a unique set of properties.
  • An element cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical means.
  • It is made up of one or more atoms which can not be destroyed. (they are indestructible)

Q

Atom

A
  • The smallest particle of an element that retains its identity in a chemical reaction
  • They cannot be changed by chemical (acid, fire, nuclear bomb) or physical means (filtration, magnets, boiling, or hitting with an axe).

Q

Lewis Structure

A
  • Is a representation of molecules and compounds
  • Chemical symbols and solid lines are used to represent bonds between atoms
  • Shows a molecules composition (meaning what atoms it possesses) and connectivity (meaning which atoms are bonded to each other)

Q

Ball and Stick Model

A
  • representation of molecules and compounds by a drawing on a page or a 3D model which can be handled
  • Similar to Lewis Structures ball and stick models use chemical symbols and solid lines to represent bonds between atoms
  • shows you a molecules composition (meaning what atoms it possesses) and connectivity (meaning which atoms are bonded to each other).
  • Unlike Lewis structures, ball and stick models, show you use colored balls (with or without a chemical symbol) to represent its atoms
