Q

What is the difference between a Cation and Anion?

A

Anion gains an electron and acquires a surplus negative charge. A Cation loses electrons and is left with an excess of positive charge

Q

What are ionic bonds?

A
  • Attraction of cation to an anion.
  • weak and dissociate easily in the presence of something more attractive such as water.
  • e.g. Na and Cl to form table salt

What is dehydration synthesis?

A

Process joining monomers to polymers in cells. Hydrogen removed from one monomer and Hydroxyl removed from another monomer

Q

What is Hydrolysis?

A

Opposite of Dehydration Synthesis. A water molecule ionizes into OH and H. The cell breaks a covalent bond linking one monomer to another and adds the H to one monomer and the OH to the other one. All chemical digestion consists of hydrolysis reactions

What is a Decomposition Reaction?

A

AB –> A+B

e.g. decomposition of starch into glucose molecules

18
Q

What are synthesis reactions?

A

A + B –> AB

e.g. Synthesis of proteins from amino acids

19
Q

What are the 2 divisions of metabolism?

A
  • Catabolism –> Energy releasing decomposition reactions; produce smaller molecules from larger ones; Exergonic
  • Anabolism –> Energy storing synthesis reactions; Endergonic
20
Q

What is oxidation?

A

any chemical reaction in which a molecule gives up electrons and releases energy

21
Q

What is reduction?

A

A chemical reaction in which a molecule gains electrons an energy
