Chapter 2 Flashcards
What are the steps in the research design process?
Ask a question, do background research, construct a hypothesis, conduct an experiment, observe, and draw a conclusion.
What should you do if your hypothesis is true, partially true, or false?
If the hypothesis is true, report and submit the results to a journal. If it’s partially true or false, repeat the experiment and adjust the hypothesis as necessary.
What are the types of quantitative research methods?
Experimental, quasi-experimental, correlational, surveys, systematic observation, longitudinal, and cross-sectional studies.
Describe systematic observation and its two types.
Systematic observation involves observing in a structured way; it can be naturalistic (observing in a natural setting) or structured (observing in a manipulated setting).
What are qualitative research methods?
Interviews, focus groups, ethnography, and literature reviews.
What are independent and dependent variables in research?
Independent variables are manipulated factors, while dependent variables are measured outcomes.
What is the role of a mediator variable in research?
Mediator variables account for any relationship between independent and dependent variables.
What are the ethics considerations in research?
Minimize risk, describe research, avoid deception, keep results anonymous, and follow guidelines from ethics boards such as the CPA Ethics Board.
What is family policy?
Family policy involves laws and regulations that directly or indirectly impact families with children.
What is evidence-based practice in research?
Evidence-based practice involves building understanding, advocating, evaluating, and developing models.
