Chapter 2 Flashcards
Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia
Also known as Immotile Cilia Syndrome
-Cause problems of the cilia in the respiratory tract
-bronchiectasis
-a reversal of the thorax and abdominal organs
-sinus aplasia
Lysosomal Storage Disorder
Specific lysosomal enzyme is absent or inactive, preventing digestion of certain cellular substances and allowing the to build up in cells
This allows substances to build to a harmful level which leads to widespread tissue weakness, injury, and death. There us no cure and the lifespan is typically severely shortened.
Disorder is inherited, members of a family with the disorder should have genetic evaluation about the risk of passing the disorder to children.
Ribosomal RNA
Translates the instructions and provides the machinery needed for protein synthesis
Messenger RNA
Carries the instructions for protein synthesis, obtained from the DNA molecule, into the cytoplasm
Transfer RNA
Reads the instructions and delivers the appropriate amino acids to the ribosomes
Type of energy production that occurs in the mitochondria with the Krebs cycle
Aerobic Metabolism
aerobic pathways occurring in the mitochondria and involving the citric acid cycle
G0
Cell may leave the cell cycle & either remain in a state of inactivity or reenter the cell cycle at another time
RESTING PHASE
G1
Cell begins to prepare for mitosis by increasing proteins, organelles, & cytoskeletal elements
PREPARE FOR DIVISION
S Phase
Synthesis phase, when DNA synthesis or replication occurs and the centrioles begin to replicate
SYNTHETIC DNA REPLICATION
G2
Pre-mitotic phase and is similar to G1 in terms of RNA activity and protein synthesis
PRE-MITOTIC PHASE
M Phase
Cell mitosis occurs
CELL DIVISION
