Chapter 2 Flashcards
What is wavelength?
The distance between one peak of a wave and the next peak.
What is amplitude?
Height of each peak (or depth of each trough)
What is frequency?
The rate of vibration of the wave (number of wavelengths within a specified time period).
Convex lens versus concave lens?
Convex lens = refracted light toward a focal point. Oval shape.
Concave lens = refracted away from a focal point in front of the lens. Vase shape.
On the EMR spectrum, what side is 400nm?
- Blue
- UV Rays
- High E, high frequency, low wavelength
On the EMR spectrum, what side is 700nm?
- Red
- Infared
- Low E, low frequency, high wavelength
What type of microscope is used for viewing live organisms?
Darkfield & Phase Contrast
What type of microscope produces a 3D image?
Differential Interference Contrast (DIC) & Confocal
What type of microscope is used to distinguish living cells from dead cells?
Fluorescence
What color do gram-positive cells stain?
Purple
What color do gram-negative cells stain?
Pink
What is the purpose of gram staining?
Used to distinguish cells by cell-wall type.
What is the purpose of acid-fast staining?
Used to distinguish acid-fast bacteria such as M. tuberculosis from non-acid-fast cells.
What is the purpose of endospore staining?
Used to distinguish endospores.
What is the purpose of flagella staining?
Used to view and study flagella in bacteria that have them.
