Chapter 19 Flashcards
Below-normal concentration of ozone in a particular area.
Ozone hole
Acidified precipitation due to sulfur being released into the atmosphere.
Acid Rain
Major cause of ozone destruction. Commonly used as coolants in refrigerators and air conditioners.
CFC’s
Gases that have special heat-trapping abilities, such as, carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide
Greenhouse gases
The warming of the atmosphere due to greenhouse gases
Greenhouse effect
A class of compounds that includes DDT, chlordane, lindane, and dieldrin. They break down slowly in the environment.
Chlorinated hydrocarbons
The process of any molecules accumulating in the fatty tissue of animals and increasing as moves up the trophic levels of the food chain
Biological Magnification
Porous rock reservoirs in which ground water is stored
Aquifers
Dangerous industrial chemicals such as asbestos and dioxin.
Carcinogens
Human-introduced environmental changes that affect ecosystems worldwide.
Global change
A potentially lethal form of skin cancer.
Malignant melanomas
