Chapter 18 Flashcards
An ecological interaction in which one organism feeds on another
Predation
Reciprocal evolutionary adjustments between interacting members of an ecosystem.
Coevolution
A type of predation in which the predator feeds on, but usually does not kill a larger organism.
Parasitism
Defensive chemical compound produced by a plant
Secondary compound
Ecological interaction in which two or more species live together in a close, long-term association.
Symbiosis
A symbiotic association in which both partners benefit.
Mutualism
An ecological interaction in which one species benefits and the other species is neither harmed nor helped.
Commensalism
And ecological interaction between two or more species that use the same scarce resources such as food, light, and water.
Competition
A functional role of a species in an ecosystem. (It’s job)
Niche
The entire range of conditions and organism can tolerate.
Fundamental niche
The part of its fundamental niche that a species actually occupies.
Realized niche
Local extinction of one species due to competition.
Competitive exclusion
The variety of species living within an ecosystem.
Biodiversity
Prevailing weather conditions and a given area.
Climate
A major type of terrestrial ecological community, such as a grassland or a desert.
