What was the United Nations?
a peacekeeping body designed to promote peace
What were the Satellite Nations?
countries dominated by the Soviet Union
What is containment?
taking measures to prevent any extension of communist rule to other countries
What was the Iron Curtain?
a phrase that came to stand for the division of Europe
What was the Cold War?
a conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union in which neither nation directly confronted the other on the battlefield.
What was the Truman Doctrine?
a statement that declared “it must be the policy of the United States to support free people’s who are resisting attempted subjugation by armed minorities or by outside pressures”
What was the Marshall Plan?
provided some $13 billion in aid to 16 countries in Europe. It made Western Europe flourish and lose appeal in the communist party
What was the Berlin Airlift?
In attempt to break the blockade, American and British officials started to fly in food and supplies to West Berlin
What was the North Atlantic Treaty Organization? (NATO)
a defensive military alliance. the 12 members(Belgium, Denmark, France, Great Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Norway and Portugal) pledged military support to on another in case any member was attacked.
Who was Ching Kai-shek?
ruled in southern and eastern China.
Who was Mao Zedong?
He ruled northern China.
What was the 38th Parallel?
a line(not really a visible line) that separated Northern and Soutern Korea.
Whats is Taiwan?
a small island about 100 miles off of the southeast coast of China.
What is the Korean War,
On June 25th, 1950, North Korean forces swept across the 38th Parallel in a surprise attack on South Korea. The conflict that followed became known as the Korean War
