Chapter 17 (Climate) Flashcards
the pattern of weather that occurs in an area over many years
climate
the region between latitudes 23.5 degrees North and 23.5 degrees South which receives the most solar radiation because the Sun shines almost directly over these areas
tropics
the region from 66.5 degrees North to the pole and 66.5 degrees South to the pole in which the Sun shines least and it gets the least amount of solar radiation
polar zone
the region from 23.5 degrees to 66.5 degrees both North and South of the equator; temperatures here are moderate
temperate zone
Any structure or behavior that helps an organism survive in its environment. Inherited characteristic that increases an organism’s chance of survival
adaptation
a long period of rest or inactivity by an animal, usually in the winter, to conserve energy
hibernation
A climate event caused by either the warming or cooling of Pacific waters off the western coast of tropical South America. IT causes global changes to weather patterns for several years, resulting droughts in some areas while flooding precipitation in others. It can also result in stronger storms, such as hurricanes and typhoons.
El Nino (El Nino (or La Nina))
short periods of climate change caused by changes in the amount of solar radiation an area receives
season
The natural heating process of the Earth, by which gases in the atmosphere trap thermal energy (heat).
Natural situation in which heat is retained in Earth’s atmosphere by carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor, and other gases.
greenhouse effect
A rise in average global temperatures.
global warming
is the destroying and cutting down of trees
deforestation
6 climate types
tropical, dry, polar, mild, continental, high elevation
3 ways to reduce pollution
drive less, stop deforestation, burn less fossil fuels
Name 3 things that humans do that add to pollution
deforestation, burn fossil fuels, drive gas guzzler cars
Who created the climate classification system?
Koppen
