Chapter 16 Study Guide Flashcards
Describe the 3 tests used for cerebral lateralization of functions such as language
- Sodium Amytal test
- Dichotic Listening
- fMRI
In studies using PET or fMRI, which hemisphere of the brain demonstrates greater activation when one performs a language test?
Left hemisphere
Describe Wernickes aphasia
Deficits in receptive language:
•Poor comprehension of spoken and written language
•Fluent speech that sounds normal but doesn’t make sense
Describe Brocas aphasia
Deficits in expressive language:
•Normal comprehension of written and spoken language
•Meaningful speech that is slow, disjointed, and poorly articulated
What is the function of the accurate fasciculus?
Pathway connecting Wernickes and Broca’s areas
What is global aphasia
Disruption to all language abilities (expressive and receptive) due to lesions in anterior cortex, posterior cortex, and white matter
What is Phonological analysis
Analysis of sound of language
What is Grammatical analysis
Analysis of the structure of language
What is Semantic analysis
Analysis of the meaning of language
Define dyslexia
Pathological difficulty in reading that does not result from visual, motor, or intellectual deficits
What is Surface dyslexia
Loss of lexical procedure (ability to recognize words based on memories for words), but can use phonetic procedure (sound out words)
What is deep dyslexia (phonological dyslexia)
Loss of phonetic procedure (ability to apply rules of pronunciation in reading), but intact lexical procedure (recognize and pronounce familiar words from memory)
What is aphasia? Lost one type of aphasia
Deficit in ability to produce or comprehend language
Broca’s Aphasia
