3.1-3.3 Flashcards
Describe the difference between afferent and efferent nerves
Afferent nerves carry sensory signals to the CNS.
Efferent nerves carry motor signals from the CNS to the skeletal muscles
Describe the purpose and components of meninges
The purpose of meninges is to protect the CNS. It is split into 3 protective membranes called the dura mater, arachnoid membrane, and the pia mater
List the ventricles in the brain. What is contained within the ventricles
The two lateral ventricles, the third ventricle, and the fourth ventricle.
They are interconnected by a series of openings and thus form a single reservoir
Describe the origin and route of cerebrospinal fluid
Thought to be produced by choroid plexuses. Excess fluid is continuously absorbed from the subarachnoid space into large blood filled space which run through the dura mater and drain into the jugular veins of the neck
What is the difference between tracts and nerves
Tracts are in the CNS. Nerves are in the PNS
The metabolic center of the neuron is called(blank) or (blank)
Cell body or soma
Which part of the neuron contains DNA
Nucleus
Define Dendrites
Short processes emanating from cell body, receive most of the synaptic contacts from other neurons
Define axon
Long, narrow process that projects from the cell body
Define buttons
Button like endings of axon branches, which release chemicals into synapses
Define synapse
Gaps between adjacent neurons across which chemical signals are transmitted
What is the central nervous system made up of?
Brain and Spinal Cord
