stabilize a fracture or dislocation; if not, can further hurt the patient
What is a SAM splint?
commercial splint; padded aluminum splint
What are 3 types of splints?
Rigid splints can be commercial
Soft splints: pillow, towel or blanket tied with cravat bandages.
Self- splinting also called buddy plint or anatomic splint
Where should you splint and how should you align the limb?
Align the limb to the point where there is enough circulation
Splint the joints when the bone is fracture; splint the bones when the joint is fractured
What does stabilizing do?
minimize further injury by holding a body part to prevent movement
What are the reasons for stabilizing?
Reduces pain, prevents further damage, prevents an open fracture, & reduces bleeding and swelling
What is a sling?
triangular bandage
What are 3 types of slings?
Regular/ common
Shoulder/ clavicle
Improvised
