Closed Fracture:
skin is intact, no wound near the fracture
Open Fracture:
skin is broken, bone may protrude the skin
What is DOTS?
Deformity, Open wound, tenderness, swelling
What is a dislocation?
separation of the bones from the joints
Signs of dislocation?
pain, tenderness, deformity, difficulty or inability to move a joint
Treatment of Dislocation
Assess capillary refill and check distal pulses and asses nerve function
Immobilize the joint- check the capillary refill and pulse after splinting
Use RICE
Treat for shock- warm and comfy
What is a strain and where does it common occur?
Soft tissue injury of the muscle
Commonly occurs to the back
Symptoms of strain
extreme pain, severe tenderness, pain or stiffness if the muscle is moved, bump or indentation that can be seen or felt, loss of function of the injured muscle
Treatment of Strain?
Immobilize the injury
Place the victim in a comfortable position
Apply cold as describe in step 2 of RICE
Activate EMS
What is crepitice?
A grating sensation is felt and sometimes even heard when the ends of the broken bone are rubbed together
