Externalizing Disorders
Symptoms include rule violations that are frequent, intense and pervasive. Before 12, most likely to persist into adulthood.
ADHD
Hyperactivity, attention deficit, impulsivity. Diagnosed in early elementary school.
ODD
A pattern of negative, hostile, and defiant behavior. Symptoms must last for at least 6 months and must cause impairment in life functioning. Most behaviors are illegal and antisocial.
Softs signs
Delays in fine motor coordination (sign of externalizing disorder)
Parent styles
Authoritative, Indulgent, Neglectful, Authoritarian

Internalizing Disorders
Children may express symptoms of adult disorders - no separate category for children. Sadness, fear, and somatic complaints. Depressive symptoms.
Behavioral family therapy (BFT)
Teaches parents and teachers to use operant conditioning. Mostly used for ODD. Goal: authoritative parenting.
Multisystemic therapy (MST)
Combining family treatment with interventions in child’s peer group, school, and neighborhood. Effective
Peer Sociometric Technique
Have kids rate who is liked the most and the least. Neglected -> receive few of either and are most likely to have internalizing disorder. Rejected receive the most “liked the least” and are most likely to have externalizing disorder.
Reactive attachment disorder
Withdrawn behavior among very young children around their adult caregivers
Defensive pessimism
Setting low expectations for upcoming performance, despite having performed well in previous similar situations.
Hedonic treadmill
A well-cited study showing that people who had befallen great fortune or great tragedy returned to their preexisting levels of happiness within a year following the event.
