Chapter 16 Endocrine System Flashcards
What do the thyroid glands do?
Regulate metabolism in the body with triiodothyronine and thyroxine and lowers the blood calcium level.
What do the parathyroid glands do?
Raise the blood calcium level with parathyroid hormone.
What do adrenal glands do?
Respond to stress.
What are the two parts of adrenal glands?
Adrenal medulla
Adrenal cortex
What does the adrenal medulla do?
Secretes epinephrine and norepinephrine so heartbeat and blood pressure increase, blood glucose level rises and muscles become energized.
What is the adrenal cortex’s two main type of hormones for long term responses to stress?
Monocotyledonous
Sex hormones
What is a malfunction in the adrenal cortex?
Addison disease and Cushing syndrome
What do the pancreas do?
Has islets to secrete hormones insulin and glucagon.
What are the other endocrine glands?
Testes
Thymus
Pineal gland
What are other organs that produce hormones?
Kidneys
Adipose
Prostaglandins
What is the neuroendocrine system?
The nerves and endocrine system exerts control over the other systems and maintain homeostasis.
